History of Starkville

Starkville, MS was founded in 1831. It was named to honor general John Stark. After the American Civil War, dairy cows were brought to Starkville which changed the agriculture from cotton to dairying.

Starkville is also known as a college town. Mississippi State University was founded in 1876. It is now the city's economic mainstay. Over half of the population is made up of the students at the university.

At the university homes the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library. Ulysses was the 18th president of the United States and is known for his command of the Union Army in Vicksburg, MS.

Starkville is known by another name as well. If you haven't heard already, its Starkvegas. At first, this was portrayed as an insult. Now, it has turned into a slogan most State fans are proud of.
